Slide and Film Scanners: Options, Choices and Features
Slide and film scanners are the best way to protect your family
photos from damage which can occur including from water, fire or other natural disasters. There are many kinds
to choose from but your choice will depend on a number of different factors. They are all relatively simple to
set up and to use, so don’t let yourself get worked up about complexity. In fact, with the improved software
that you can get, you basically only have to do a few things on your own and the scanner will do the rest for
you.
How much you will want to spend on your scanner might depend on your goals. If you are simply looking to
preserve family photos, you can go near the lower end of the price scale but if you are interested in professional
quality scans, you may have to spend a little more to get that level of quality. Before you commit to a type or
brand, make sure that it will be compatible with your computer’s operating program and also see if there are any
accessories that you will need but are not included. That way, you will not have to delay your first use when you
come home with your new scanner.
Once you get the scanner home, open the box and remove everything carefully. Save the packaging, including all
of the padding or other items in case you need to return it. Read through the instructions before you start because
with some, you will have to close all other programs on your computer before you get started and may have to shut
down several times before the installation is completed. Once you get started, do a few practice photos to make
sure that you are getting the results that you are after and that you can be happy with.
For some people, the simplest of scanners is all that they want. Those people tend to get overwhelmed with too
much technology and options to deal with. Others are real techno fans and want every new development. If you are a
person in the former group who is friends with a member of the latter, you might be able to buy their old scanner
at a very substantial savings. If they are a good friend, they might just allow you to have their old one; however,
they may be going to a store that offers a trade in credit for their old scanners. Look at slide and film scanners
as an investment unless you know that you will only use it one time and then never again. Then you might consider a
rental instead of purchasing.
